My Husband Orville

Well- I mean- my future husband… Orville Peck. Once we meet and he falls in love with me and such.

I got to see him in concert for the second time on Tuesday night. And once again- a good show.

He played the Armory in Minneapolis. Which is a really good place to see a show. Not bad acoustics. Not overly huge. Good sight lines. And tons of bars and bathrooms. And while Orville filled it mostly up- I preferred seeing him in the more intimate First Ave space.

But he was still good here. The crowd? Not so much.

It was a bunch of first timers, who I think were just there because Orville is gay and it’s pride month. I’m not sure they really knew his music or much about him other than “hot, masked, gay, country singer”.

The crowd energy felt off. Like people cheered and applauded after songs— but for like 5 seconds. And then it would get quiet.

I think Orville sensed this and possibly mixed up his set list. After the first couple songs, the concert seemed to skew heavily to his album Bronco, and a select couple other songs (like the new gay cowboy Willie Nelson song).

I wasn’t mad about it as I really love his album Bronco. Top to bottom I think it’s a fantastic offering. Plus he did Drive (me crazy) from Show Pony and I love that song (it’s about gay truckers). And he also pulled good songs from Pony.

So I was happy.

He moved around and danced and interacted with the crowd and did his normal gesticulation while singing — and he brought out a fringe mask for his encore (lately he’s eschewed the full fringe for just a Lone Ranger mask).

I also liked the uncomplicated stage set with the desert west backdrop, the marquee light monicker, and the line of klieg lights.

Oh! And the show was punctual. The first opener (Debbie Dawes- awesome!) started really close to 7. And there was maybe a 20 minute gap to the second opening act. And then maybe 15 or so to Orville.

He started about 8:40 and played to 10:40. Great 2 hour set and I was home by 11 on a school night. Exactly the way concerts should be done (take note Madonna).

All in all, it was a good concert. It might have been better had I had a posse that I could have gone with- but I was ok enjoying him alone. Mostly.
