I’m just gonna say it– this is my favorite television show right now.
I think it’s smart. Well-written. Cheeky. Irreverent. Fun. Funny. Fresh. And chock full of hotness.
I mean, enough said. Right?
I’m super picky about musical numbers in television and movies. There is an extraordinarily fine line between pulling it off and failing miserably. For example: the movie Chicago pulled it off– the movie Mamma Mia was a disaster.
Or “Sound of Music Live!”— don’t get me started on THAT abortion.
Anyway, I think “Galavant” pulls it off exceedingly well. The songs are humorous with a slightly modern twist and need to be done with a nod and wink– which all the performers do. I mean, a love song titled “Maybe You’re Not The Worst Thing Ever” that says “You’re better than crabs, you’re better than scurvy”?
And the entire cast can all sing very well and they all have good comedic timing. And each has a clearly developed “character” which makes the show fun to watch.
Plus, I really like how they occasionally break down the fourth wall to let us know that they are all in on the joke too. They completely acknowledge that a musical number is coming and then the characters will groan about it.
After one particularly long number, Galavant doubles over to catch his breath and says, “That was a long song and I am really out of shape!”
And the non-musical dialogue is also cleverly written and full of laugh moments. I guffawed last night (as I was catching up on some episodes) where the Princess (antagonist/love interest of Galavant) is suggesting to Galavant that instead of his tall, beautiful ex with the perfect hair and body that perhaps he might like a short, cute, and “ethnically hard to pin down” woman instead.
It was funny because she IS racially ambiguous which is most assuredly exactly why she was cast. But it was the way she tossed the line that totally made it a moment.
Then there are the guest stars– John Stamos, Ricky Gervais, weird Al….
And then there’s this:
Le sigh. Joshua Sasse is ever so dreamy! And not only is he ridiculously handsome, but he’s funny and can sing! The bloody trifecta!
Seriously. Best show on TV right now. And you could be missing it.
