While it’s been really nice being asked to sing in the small choral ensemble and to be in the special TV appearance, it has had a few drawbacks.

Like animosity.

After performing in the TV gig this past Saturday, I received a text message that was a bit of a downer:

As you can see, a fellow chorus member was a bit upset at being left out of the process. It then went on:

As you can see, I tried my best to diffuse the situation, but to no avail. But the whole exchange left me deflated and questioning.

“Am I viewed as receiving preferential, undeserved treatment? Is it creating friction? Do people look unfavorably upon me now?”

It also left me a bit pissed. As this TV gig was the first thing I was ever asked to do. And yeah, I auditioned for a solo– but it’s my first one. It’s not like I sing them all the time and at every concert.

Meh. It’s shit like this that makes my tummy all oogy because it really bothers me.

Anyway. On a lighter note, here’s a still shot from after the news cast with the morning anchors:

Golly. Sounds to me like he doesn’t get asked because he comes across as a bitter pain in the ass — no director wants to work with that.

I spent the year after I graduated from college working in student administration at a small private college with a great music program. I was heard singing in a skit for the dorm I ran and was asked to join the choir. I auditioned and was accepted and subsequently began voice lessons. After a time I was encouraged by my voice teacher to audition for the Chapel Choir; a small group that would develop its own repertoire and tour the state of California. I did and I was accepted. And then the trolling began. Never directly but often I would hear of how favoritism and other factors had gotten me my place. I told a friend (someone who had been mentioned as one who had spurred the favoritism) that I was considering withdrawing so an actual student could take my place. She said, “You were chosen for your voice, for your ability. If someone else could do better than you they’d be here. Musicians are cutthroat assholes. Get over it.” Lesson learned.

I thought you handled the conversation very well.
I agree that it is in your friend’s court to speak to this “Ben”. But if you are feeling really uncomfortable about being specially selected, you could talk with Ben yourself. I have challenged favouritism shown towards me from time to time.

I wish I had some cheese to offset the taste of his sour grapes. Fuck him and feed him fish heads. You made it and he didn’t. Welcome to the real world.
