Because I know y’all are champing at the bit….
The choral concerts this weekend went spectacularly well and Both nights were basically sold out.
Friday’s performance was excellent, with only a few teeny, minor bobbles here and there. And Saturday’s performance was magnificent in all respects.
Especially the Harvey Milk piece.
The audience reaction to it was almost overwhelming. Pretty much an instant standing ovation both nights– and not one of those “oh, it’s over so we should probably stand” standing o’s. The applause kept going and going and we took multiple bows.
The first night there were some audible audience moments– like right before the applause on Friday there was a distinct “wow”. There was also an audible gasp when we started singing some of the racial slurs in one of the movements.
And on Saturday, when we finished the “I Am The Bullet” movement, the audience sat in silence– not knowing whether to applaud something so dark.
My father came up to see it on Saturday and while he liked the first half of the concert, he loved the Harvey Milk part. He told me he was quite moved during several parts.
I’ve heard other feedback from different sources and everything points to this being one of, if not the best Twin Cities Gay chorus concerts ever.
All in all, an excellent experience. And while I know that concerts like that won’t happen every cycle, it’s nice to know that they do happen.
As a good friend put it, I may have found a replacement for drum corps.
