New Ahrt!

Okay, I have a problem. I see art when I go to the St. Paul Art Crawl and I just have to buy something!

The thing is– I don’t need any more art really. And my poor walls certainly don’t need anymore.

But when I see something that speaks to me, I just have to get it. Mainly because I can’t stand the thought of passing it up, and then having someone else buy it, and then having to live with the knowledge that my art is in someone else’s home!

I know, I know. Problem.

The art crawl was this past weekend, and once again I bought something. This:

I know what you are probably thinking. That’s not cb’s usual style. It just looks like an Art Deco poster or something.

But the magic is when you get up close and realize the artist had painted it on sandpaper.

The backing is finished, stained, sealed plywood that he then staples sandpaper to. The staples are all precisely spaced and hold the sandpaper in place.

Then he primes the sandpaper, then adds layer after layer of matte acrylic paint.

In person the piece is really hypnotic. Not only are the colors vibrant and intriguing, but the texture is so…. You just want to touch the damn thing! And the staples just add another textural layer, and a certain “unexpected industrialness” which I love.

The piece is currently in a gallery show, but I can pick it up this Saturday.

Now I just have to figure out where the fuck it’s going to go in my condo?

Did you ever get that cool watch that “spells” out the time?

Just because it’s art, doesn’t mean it has to hang on a wall. Lean it against anything, on the floor, or a stand. Or hang it between two window panes. It’ll look good anywhere with those colors!!

  3. What do you call a guy with no arms and no legs hanging on the wall? Art. hyuck hyuck.
Chip – I have a Pebble watch that I helped back on Kickstarter. It can tell you time in words. Kinda fun. I also use it to see who is calling to decide if it is worth getting my phone. You can also see emails and tweets. There is a way you can use it to unlock your front door if you have one that is hooked to your network. You have to setup http get commands and know your external IP address. Someday< i will have time to set this up when I am not watching Scandal, Arrow, Revenge, or Once. 🙂

Looks really nice. I love the blue color. Where did you hang it at the end? Show us more pictures!

It’s an illness, perhaps. But fuck it, there are worse things a girl could do. You buy art because you like it, anyway, not because there’s a bare spot on the wall or because the color palette goes well with the sofa. Any homo worth his salt can always work another piece in.

I really like it! You can hang it on my wall!

WoofyTexan: It’s not the Pebble watch, but that does look cool !!

  8. Partick says:

You’re going to hang it on my wall. In exchange I will send you that lovely split peaches and nudes study of mine that you covet. Deal?

  9. Doréus says:

Where on your walls? You don’t really need windows, do you?
That being said, it is indeed a beautiful piece.

It must be your “style” since you bought it. Lovely!

  11. Me likes. That’s a nice addition.
