Okay, I have a problem. I see art when I go to the St. Paul Art Crawl and I just have to buy something!
The thing is– I don’t need any more art really. And my poor walls certainly don’t need anymore.
But when I see something that speaks to me, I just have to get it. Mainly because I can’t stand the thought of passing it up, and then having someone else buy it, and then having to live with the knowledge that my art is in someone else’s home!
I know, I know. Problem.
The art crawl was this past weekend, and once again I bought something. This:
I know what you are probably thinking. That’s not cb’s usual style. It just looks like an Art Deco poster or something.
But the magic is when you get up close and realize the artist had painted it on sandpaper.
The backing is finished, stained, sealed plywood that he then staples sandpaper to. The staples are all precisely spaced and hold the sandpaper in place.
Then he primes the sandpaper, then adds layer after layer of matte acrylic paint.
In person the piece is really hypnotic. Not only are the colors vibrant and intriguing, but the texture is so…. You just want to touch the damn thing! And the staples just add another textural layer, and a certain “unexpected industrialness” which I love.
The piece is currently in a gallery show, but I can pick it up this Saturday.
Now I just have to figure out where the fuck it’s going to go in my condo?
