I call him “Neptune”

Lately I’ve been sort of unhappy with my bed. It was just sort of… Blah. Sort of meh.

Not at all epic.

Which started me on an intense Internet search for a new bed. Where I found several expensive options that I quite liked. Most recently this:

Now this is an epic bed!

Yet also expensive.

And one of my New Years resolutions is to be more frugal, or at least not wasteful with buying shit I don’t need. And I have a perfectly decent bed.

Decent and boring.

No flair. And it just didn’t fit my whimsical/eclectic loft design.

So my mind began to work. I could tweak my current bed to amp it up some. I might be able to add some architectural detail– and I could certainly paint it a glossy, fun color.

I went to this architectural salvage store on Saturday and found this Art Deco wood piece that had obviously been in a fire.

I bought it and attached it to my headboard, like thus:

And then I found the paint color (high gloss) and started painting:

Bee tee dubs, gloss paint sucks to work with. It runs everywhere and doesn’t like to stick well to veneer wood products.

But after a few coats and much cleanup, I ended with this:

I’m now loving my bed. Because it’s unique a d it’s mine. I put my creative stamp on it. And it works in my space.

I think it’s cool as hell, if I do say so myself.

And all for a grand total of about $70.

I call him “Neptune”.

Now if only I can find someone to help test drive him.

Neptune needs a little detailing to break it out a little more. You can get all sorts of things like individual beads, lace, string, brass hardware etc. that would make Netpune shine.

Looks like Neptune has some good places to hold on to during…test drives.

Very nice! And I also like your artwork over the bed. Hope you find somebody to test drive the bed with real soon…..I’d offer if I was in your neighborhood 😉

    Great job!
But if you really wanted to make a custom headboard for yourself, maybe you should have also added some function to the fashion – like make it padded and add some places to attach rope or handcuffs.

But I thought you slept in a sling 😉

I am really impressed! Rather than spending thousands of dollars on a new bed and having to do something with the old one, you spent $70 and transformed your old bed into a completely different. And you did it yourself! Bravo!!!

That is great CB. You must have cable/HGTV? That is an awesome color choice for your room too. As I started reading your post, I thought for sure you would be going with a leather headboard of some kind so I apologize for thinking you’d go with leather. But the real question… is it quiet during recreational episodes? Just wondering.
I guess you have a down comforter on your bed tonight. I saw on the news how cold it is up your way. I’m thinking of you.
PS It was 75 here today.

  12. Love the context of this next to your neighbors’ bedroom wall! You know this means war ;0)
