A Good Weekend For Drum Corps

I’ve tried my best not to bore y’all with excessive drum corps posts this year, and the season’s been rough enough and enervating enough that there’s been precious little that I felt like writing about.

But I have to write about this past weekend.

It was our last weekend of judged shows before we head out East to the championships.  Our last opportunity to impress the judges and get that all important good score (as our best score from this weekend will affect our performance order at the Championships).

And Minnesota Brass had a VERY good weekend.

Saturday was our home show in St. Paul.  It’s at a high school football stadium that sits in a bowl.  Seriously, the bleachers are built into the hillside, there’s no track, and the stadium field is completely surrounded by an encircling hill.

It’s brilliant to play in because we are close enough to the crowd for them to smell us, and the sound we produce hits immediately and is effing LOUD!

I had a superior show Saturday evening, and I posted on Facebook that my individual performance managed to rip a baby’s face off.  Which is a good thing.

On Saturday they announced our score… a 93.10.  A very good score– made even better when we heard the score received by our arch-nemesis corps (The Buccaneers).  They also had a show on Saturday evening, but out East.

The Bucs scored a 93.0.

*GASP*

This is the FIRST time in 7 years that ANY corps has had a higher score than the Bucs after performances on the same night.  I guess when they announced our score at the Buc’s show, quite a ripple went through the crowd.

All this did was add fuel to our fire.  And on Sunday, we had another show.  This time in St. Peter, MN.  I ripped more babies faces off, and boy did Minnesota Brass fucking NAIL it to the motherfuckin’ WALL!

I had goosebumps at the end of our show.  It was absolutely electric and everyone could feel it.  I had so much energy when I ripped the horn off my face at the end that I was vibrating all the way at the press box.  I could see the judges and I was mentally DARING them to fuck with us.

And people did notice “the vibe”.  The reason I know?  I had 3 different people from our staff who came up to me after the show on Sunday and commented on my expression and my glare at the end of the show and that they wish everyone did that.

Our score?  94.25.

The judges all commented on the fire, the passion, the performace of the corps.  They finally ‘felt it’ from us.

I felt it too.  It was one of those performance moments where things truly are synergistic and the show goes to another level.  Where you can tangibly feel the energy from all your fellow corps members, and you are buoyed by it and swept along effortlessly.

Sunday reminded me why it is I do this activity.
